By car to Croatia
Traveling by car from Poland to Croatia can be an attractive option for several reasons:
Freedom and independence: Traveling by car provides full control over the route, breaks, and travel plan. You can stop at interesting places, explore new areas, and flexibly adjust the route according to your preferences.
Sightseeing along the way: The route from Poland to Croatia can lead through picturesque regions such as the Czech Republic, Austria, or Slovenia, allowing you to enjoy unique landscapes along the way. Traveling by car provides the opportunity to visit interesting places that might go unnoticed during a plane journey. Charming towns, landmarks, and nature become directly accessible.
Economy: For larger groups traveling by car may be more economical than purchasing plane tickets for everyone.
Comfort and privacy: Traveling by car ensures comfort and privacy, especially when traveling with family or a group of friends. There are no restrictions on the amount of luggage, and the car becomes a private space.
Depending on where in Poland the journey begins and how many stops you decide to make, the average travel time is around 20 hours. From our experience, the route from Gdańsk to Trogir, without sightseeing along the way and without an overnight stay, takes 18-19 hours. The travel time will depend on the chosen route. The most popular and fastest route is through the Czech Republic, Austria, and Slovenia (the views in Austria and Slovenia are spectacular even through the car window). Another route to Croatia is through Slovakia and Hungary. In both cases, remember to purchase vignettes in advance, as most highways and express roads are toll roads. Below are links to websites where you can purchase vignettes:
Trasa 1:
Czech Republic online vignette*
Czech Republic sticker-The vignette can be purchased at sales points or EuroOil stations. (No stickers, only confirmation of purchase)
Austria online vignette*
A vignette for Austria must be purchased 18 days in advance, this is a grace period for individuals under Austrian law. It is possible to purchase a vignette overnight for a company, you do not need to provide any company details, just the vehicle registration number.
Austria sticker-The vignette can be purchased at sales points in the Czech Republic and Austria or at gas stations in Austria.
Slovenia online vignette*
Slovenia sticker-The vignette can be purchased at sales points or at a gas station.
Route 2:
Slovakia online vignette*
Hungary online vignette*
* Official government websites, no additional fees for intermediaries. Vignettes do not need to be printed; an electronic form is sufficient.
In addition to travel expenses, include the cost of highway tolls in Poland and Croatia. If you have more time, we recommend skipping the highway in Croatia in favor of the toll-free route along the coast. The coastal road is longer, but it compensates for the view of the azure blue water and the surrounding seaside villages.
When choosing such a journey, remember additional car equipment such as a first aid kit, reflective vests, tow rope, valid insurance, and technical inspections. If you're traveling by car with LPG, you don't need additional adapters; the gas dispenser nozzle in each of the mentioned countries is the same as in Poland.
During your travels in Croatia, the HAK app will be useful. It provides information on places such as parking lots, gas stations, ATMs, hospitals, pharmacies, and repair services (most useful information is found in the POI tab).
Croatia has joined the Schengen zone, but remember that possession of a valid ID document is required during foreign travel. It's also essential to purchase additional insurance for yourself and your loved ones.
